Question Lent 2020 - What did you give up?
I don't claim to be an expert here, although I do come from a religious family. Every time I make a tea for my Aunty and ask if she wants sugar she always says to me 'I gave up sugar in my tea for Lent 20 years ago and never looked back'.

So, what is Lent?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lent

Quote:Lent is a solemn religious observance in the Christian liturgical calendar that begins on Ash Wednesday and ends approximately six weeks later, before Easter Sunday. The purpose of Lent is the preparation of the believer for Easter through prayer, doing penance, mortifying the flesh, repentance of sins, almsgiving, and self-denial.

...

Lent is traditionally described as lasting for 40 days, in commemoration of the 40 days Jesus spent fasting in the desert, according to the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke, before beginning his public ministry, during which he endured temptation by Satan.

Regardless of your religious beliefs, it sounds like a good opportunity to give something up in our lives, something we know is bad for us, be it sugar, porn, late night snacking, masturbation, negative thoughts, swearing or even a longer fast of some kind. Traditionally it was about red meat however I think the more modern practice is any kind of bad habit.

Again, feeling my way through this here - chime in if you are more knowledgable on this.

Dates

'Lent' 2020 (Catholic) began on
Wednesday, 26 February
and ends on
Thursday, 9 April

'Great Lent' 2020 (Orthodox) began on
Monday, 2 March
and ends on
Saturday, 18 April

So, a little late this year but still have about a month to go.

The question is... are you participating in Lent 2020 and if so, what will you give up?

I fast :
- I usually skip lunch most of the days. Some days I only eat breakfast.

I pray :
- I do the Liturgy of the Hours. I read the Lauds when I wake up, the Vespers when I get back to work and the Compline before going to sleep.

I also try to my best to refrain from anger and cursing people. It's crazy to see how short tempered and quick to curse we are for small things that others do that can irritate us.

God bless everyone in here during Lent.

Meat and dairy products, excepting when small doses of those ingredients are in nutrition supplements (priest gave me a blessing for this), but on a far more important level I’ve been trying to give up my hard-heartedness. Finally had to accept that charity, like chastity, is not something we can will ourselves into. It has to be from God, a gift, given in exchange for our humble acceptance that we are powerless to achieve these virtues without Him. I’m far from perfect at genuinely loving others, but my prayers for a charitable heart have been answered thus far in a way that lets me know I’m on the right path and that God wants me to dive deeper into this area of my life.

Gave up facebook, but have to admit it's kinda hard, if only as a source of local news in light of what's been going on with the Coronavirus debacle. Other than that I don't really miss it.

It might be a good idea to relax dietary self-restrictions at this time, you need your whole immune system and the best nutrition you can get for this Spring.

Smoking.

I was already on the carnivore diet (2 months now) so I'm not going to say I gave up carbs.

I quit cold turkey, cutting down sounds good in theory but it only extends the withdrawal symptoms and it gives your brain more time to lie to itself about what you decide to do every time you light up.

Food. I failed miserably, breaking the fast with donuts and chicken fried steak on day 13, thus thoroughly killing any spiritual benefit I might have gotten. Now I'm intermittent fasting much more moderately.

Thanks. It's been a long time coming, but I made up my mind for good.

The most dangerous thoughts I have now are thinking that I can somehow still consume nicotine in other forms without backsliding into full blown addiction ie a casual cigar here and there.

The rational side of my brain, of course, knows this is a lie. Cold turkey is the only way to go.

I get plenty of enjoyment out of my meals. I believe this helps the quitting process most of all.
