Redbeard: Forum runs on software that has reached end of life, and it runs on server software that also has reached end of life. Soon, you won't be able to host the software at all. Security bugs will no longer get patched. A change has to be made.

Looking at the latest mybb software in depth I feel like they gave up. It's okay but not that great. Seems faster than 1.6x though, I'll give them that.

Security-wise the underlying server software is fine and mybb 1.8 is now working with the latest PHP Version 7.4.4. (1.6 however is using very EOL packages as Roosh mentioned so it needs to go).

I vote for XenForo.
