and that is what is wrong with society. This aging grandma thinks that there is no risk in mocking strangers.

If she had more of a Mad Max mindset she would think...hmmm, these kids are 10x more likely than I am to be immune to this virus, not to mention physically fit. They naturally tend towards agression due to their age and are already pissed off about not getting refunds.

If I taunt them, there is a high possibility that they will choose to visit my house first if lawlessness occurs in any part of this pandemic. They will torture me and burn my house down in revenge, and my coronavirus weakened body combined with my lack of ownership of a firearm will make me an easy target....maybe I shouldn't taunt them online in a permanently recorded manner.

@Dr. Howard

It's mind blowing her audacity. But then again she represents the most protected, entitled demographic to ever exist in society. A boomer white American woman with tenure. Coupled that with a dying need for attention now that her looks are long gone. Chalk this up to "reality is stranger than fiction" because if someone created a fake boomer meme of this it would be considered too outlandish to be considered real.

If that small business can only compete based on price and volume then I am ecstatic when they have to shut down.

Small businesses who excel at customer service, expertise, and boutique offerings have very little to fear from "big box stores".

Someone is not owed my patronage simply because they decide to offer something near me first.

In a civil society we engage in thousands upon thousands of quid-pro-quos which we are not owed nor owe to others. I am not obligated to stop my car monetarily so that someone can pull out in a busy car park rather than being stuck there for a half an hour. I am not obligated to hold open the door for someone coming in behind me so that it doesn't slam shut in their face.

But on balance a society filled with people like me functions smoothly because instead of obsessively attempting to determine what I'm owed and what I owe others I simply behave in an orderly and community minded manner.

I can't imagine operating in this world on the premise of denying people any form of community solidarity "because I don't owe it to them".

That kind of mentality is precisely why our nations are devolving into dog-eat-dog shitholes.

If you would rather show solidarity with a globocorp than a local small business then you deserve everything that's happening to your country.

Bitter End gets it (see below your post).

You are getting lost in a peculiarity of categorical thought in your argument.

Your first error is talking like there is only ONE small business in the community. Likely there are more than one, so it's going to be a competition anyway and even if I accept your idea of quid-pro-quo (which I absolutely don't), it will still be superseded by other considerations when I decide which of the two (or three, or more) businesses to patronize.

Next, lets take the very common example of the modern corner convenience store vs the Trader Joes up the street.

Again, extrapolating from your professed measurements of value on the forum (nationalism, local support, etc) here is an interesting comparison:

Corner Convenience Store -- usually run by foreigners, poor and inattentive service, jacked up prices, generic / foreign goods.

Trader Joes -- staffed by extremely pleasant locals who speak my language natively or fluently, clean, comparatively competitively priced, always featuring local or regional top quality producers.

Then you can add in the farmer's market stalls with local farmers growing interesting things. Amazingly, they are still able to stay in business, even with the big bad Walmart and Trader Joes around.

Lastly, there is nothing stopping the local small business people from loving and supporting globohomo. In my profession I deal primarily with small business owners and they are not angels nor in many cases are they stalwart examples of reliable contributors to the community.

If you think Canada and the USA is a "dog-eat-dog shithole" I really don't know what to tell you except perhaps you could try visiting them. Over here a great small business can grow into a larger regional or national business as well... the categories are a bit softer than you make out.
