@Leonard D Neubache

I think tabletop games is a good way to pass time like "Dungeons and dragons" takes many hours off a day that would otherwise by dreadfully boring.

Or good long books both fiction and non-fiction. Preferably long fantasy sagas.

I have to work in Markham, after Lunar New Year all next week. First time I've actually felt a bit uneasy about this virus. Markham is China central here in the Toronto Metro Area.

disagree, this seems like an accident given how disorganized the response is. If this was planned, the 'hospitals' would already be built, the internet would already be turned off etc.

It would be like "300 million chinese line up for new vaccine program in an orderly fashion" then 1 month later " 3 chinese executives executed for tainted vaccine that killed millions of chinese"

The elites would already know to skip the vaccinations. Contrary to this, coronavirus seems very out of control.

edit: on the other hand, China has been having some economic issues lately. I still lean towards accident though.

RE: The Chinese/Asian coronavirus thread
Pissing about with a virus is very dangerous for the elites because anything that spooks the herd has a possibility to turn into a black swan event that is entirely unmanageable. Once supply chains break down then you lose control and it becomes every man for himself. At that point the shadowy elites sitting in their billion dollar bunker no longer have any control over the situation.

A lot of you will have watched the movie Contagion (2011) and a lot of you also might have noted the bizarre continuity-hole toward the end of the movie. IIRC there's a scene where Matt Damon is lining up for food that's being distributed from the back of an (extremely poorly guarded) military truck. They run out or something and he's forced to go home empty handed. The movie very quickly cuts to months later when they get the vaccine and everything is getting back to normal.

I guess they ate mice and bats during those few months or something. Perhaps it could be inferred that he got food later from another truck but the message seemed disjointed to me, as though they were going to starve the actors and tell a much grimmer story before the director suddenly decided to change it to "go home, live frugally, trust the government and everything will be fine".

This virus might be a natural mutation or designed. It might have been released deliberately or by accident. We can't know for sure and in the end it doesn't really matter. On a statistical level the world isn't going to notice a few million deaths as a result of this virus, if indeed it gets seriously out of hand. The real danger it presents is in triggering unpleasant responses in the human herd. Poorly prepared people can easily become desperate and the millions of cogs that keep the machine running can be wrecked pretty easily once panic sets in. Back in the days of the Spanish Flu society was mostly run at a local level. People were more spread out, more self sufficient, and food supplies were produced locally. If a Spanish Flu level event happened again then it's hard to predict what would happen now that our populations are so densely packed in areas that have no food storage and no means for production. I already shudder to think how the Chinese authorities are handling getting supplies in and out of a city that's ostensibly on "lockdown".

If the virus persists or gets worse then how many troops are you going to assign to trucks likely to be mobbed by thousands of starving locals? Especially when your population's "civic duty" levels are set to "Chinese"?

This might be random or it might be by design, but your major precautions should be rooted in human herd panic, not a fear of the disease itself. That means this...

[Image: home-security-traditional-door-brace-ser...138490.jpg]

...is as important as this...

RE: The Chinese/Asian coronavirus thread
CDC statement from today https://www.cdc.gov/media/releases/2020/...cases.html

below is a selection of the text and I added the emphasis/bold

Quote:It is likely there will be more cases reported in the U.S. in the coming days and weeks, likely including person-to-person spread. In previous outbreaks with MERS and SARS, the two other coronaviruses that have jumped the species barrier to cause severe illness in people, person-to-person spread has been seen, including among healthcare workers caring for patients ill with coronavirus infection. This underscores the importance of appropriate precautions in the health care setting as well in homes of people who are infected with 2019-nCoV but who may not be hospitalized. CDC has developed guidance for both situations.
This is a very serious public health situation. We understand that some people are worried about this virus and how it may impact Americans. Outbreaks of new diseases are always of concern – and in today’s connected world, an outbreak anywhere can be a risk everywhere. Risk is dependent on exposure. Someone who is in close contact with a person who is infected with 2019-nCoV will be at greater risk of infection and should take the precautions outlined in CDC’s guidance for preventing spread in homes and communities. While this is a serious public health threat, CDC continues to believe the immediate risk to the U.S. general public is low at this time.

What kind of contradictory bullshit is that. Serious situation, more cases expected and person to person transmission expected, but immediate risk is low.

The Austrian twitter guy who is saying that China did this to cull its people is an idiot. The 1 child policy is working, too well, their government is now encouraging population growth. As well this will be a blow to China's economy and psyche.

And as much as people like to go on about the "ChiComs", I really don't think they are cynical or satanic enough to cull their own people today, at least not this way, the virus will strike the Party people at the same rates.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Quote:Summary:

In China there are now 2,744 confirmed cases as of 1200am on Jan 27, an increase of 39% resulting in 80 deaths, up 43%. This is triple the 916 mainland China cases reported late on Friday. Across the globe, there are now 2,799 confirmed cases, including the 80 Chinese fatalities, so far nobody outside of China has died from the disease.
Some very unpleasant math: in China's Hubei province where Wuhan is located, epicenter of the coronavirus breakout, there have been 1,423 cases and 76 deaths, resulting in a mortality rate of over 5%.
5th US Coronavirus infection confirmed by CDC in 4 states (AZ, CA, IL, WA)
CDC calls the virus an "emerging public health threat," adding that the threat is "serious."
Incubation is asymptomatic, contagious, and can be as long as 14 days
5M may have left Wuhan for Lunar New Year
1st case was Dec 1 NOT Dec 31 so infect pop may be much bigger
US, Russia, Thailand begin plans for evacuation
Premier Li Keqiang charged with leading government's task force

RE: The Chinese/Asian coronavirus thread
(CNN) Another case of coronavirus has been confirmed, in Arizona, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Sunday, bringing the total to five cases in the United States.
The increase came as a top Chinese health official delivered some worrisome news about efforts to contain the fast-moving virus.
Several people have been infected with the Wuhan coronavirus in the US -- including a man in his 30s in Washington state; a Chicago woman in her 60s; a man in his 50s in Orange County, California, a patient in Los Angeles County; and a fifth in Arizona. All had recently traveled to Wuhan, the epicenter of the outbreak.

I think Toronto, SF, Vancouver, NYC are next, for starts.

You could make the argument that because the virus mainly kills the elderly and infirm, it would help relieve some burden on the younger population since there won't be as many grandparents and terminally ill people to have to take care of.

But the idea that the PRC is dumb enough to deliberately leak this disease out is crazy since it flies in the face of the CCP's decades-long efforts to maintain stability.

Those posts are talking about people dying and being quickly cremated in Wuhan. Only a few deaths are mentioned in Chengdu.

The virus has a long incubation period so the cases appearing in faraway regions now are probably from people heading back home for Chinese New Year in the last couple weeks.

Another thing to note is that the Party is possibly using a very Soviet means of repressing the numbers.

Simply don't provide hospitals with the staff and supplies needed to test for the virus and then even if a thousand people collapse and die with the same symptoms then technically you still don't have to list them as "confirmed" cases/deaths because it was not proven they died of the WuFlu.

This is a practice that is also creeping into Western health where (as just one example) hundreds of thousands of post-surgical deaths due to hospital-originated infections are listed as "death due to post-surgical complications" in order to prevent the tidal wave of law suits that would result if people realized that the degenerative standards and practices of health staff in the West were what caused the death of their loved one rather than a burst stitch or an errant blood clot reaching the brain.

RE: The Chinese/Asian coronavirus thread
Just got back with a pickup truck full of supplies to go with what I have left over from the ebola scare. That's what's nice about having FU money- I'm wandering round the supermarket (giving the two Chinamen a very wide berth) filling two trolleys with crates of canned goods, whilst everyone else is doing their weekly shop on a meagre budget putting one or two tins in. Got six months worth of multivitamins and 'shoplifted' a dozen packs of ibruprofen (stupid UK law only lets you buy two packs at once)

Went to a cash and carry and got cleaning products, 20 litres of oil, 40kg of rice, sauces to break the monotony plus disinfectants and hand sanitizer.

Also picked up the last masks from a building supplies outlet. Everywhere online is sold out already.

Even if if doesn't come to anything, the £300 I just spent is cheap for peace of mind. All stashed in my remote industrial unit. Off to the gun shop to max out my meagre UK ammo allowance now. Stupid country.

Where's that preppers thread that we used to have around here?

They who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety- Benjamin Franklin, as if you didn't know...

This has the potential to wreck the Chinese economy. The economic cost of this is already in the billions. The loss of face is immense. International business relationships may suffer for years.

There’s no way the Chinese government released this intentionally.
