The short answer is two-fold.

First, there's a shit ton of people living in ultra close proximity.

Wuhan has about 11,000,000 people.

It's apparently the seventh largest city in China, but that seems spurious because it definitely has less people than: Shanghai, Beijing, Tianjin, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chongqing and Chengdu, and I don't even know about other massive cities like Zhengzhou, Nanjing, Changsha and I could go on and on.

Be that as it may, let's call it the 8th-10th biggest city in China.

It would be the 4th-6th largest city in the entire Western Hemisphere (NYC, Sao Paulo and Mexico City being definitively ahead).

New York has 8.5 million people. We aren't that big of a city. Wuhan is definitely bigger

RE: The Chinese/Asian coronavirus thread
Pretty much all of China's ground transport routes through Wuhan. If it turns out that there's more like hundreds or thousands dead, and there is a high rate of human-to-human transmission, then this might end up being being worse than Chernobyl.

They've closed off Wuhan and a few other cities, but from what I've read elsewhere, this seems like a futile effort now that the pneumonia has spread to basically all of China. A relative of mine by marriage was in Wuhan and he went back home few days before the quarantine, as doubtless hundreds of thousands of others did, whether due to New year arrangements or simple prudence.

That the CCP is taking these measures, plus the fact that Xi Jinping himself made statements to address the coronavirus are signs that either Xi is determined to get a handle on the situation before it really blows up, or that the outbreak is far worse than the authorities are letting on.

By far the most worrying indicator that it's the latter and not the former is the number of infected in Hong Kong.

From CCTV:

(the bottom arrow points to the number of suspected cases in Hong Kong. It's way higher than the total suspected cases in the mainland)

This is a couple days old, but the point still stands: How does Hong Kong, with less than 0.5 % of the total Chinese population, have a fifth of all the Wuhan virus cases?

These estimates (4000+ cases) look a lot more believable than the official claim of several hundred.

Medical corruption is also increasing the likelihood that we'll get an epidemic out of this. In China, public healthcare is really underfunded and they just turn you away if you don't look like you can pay for treatment. Anyone diagnosed with the Wuhan virus is required to get free treatment, which makes doctors less willing to confirm that they are infected. Apparently a lot of poor people are being told they have normal pneumonia and sent home, for instance.

The CCP is also trying to downplay the severity of the outbreak by making it seem like things are worse in the US. My wife's social media feed is full of trending articles saying that America is in a state of crisis, since 6,600 people died of the flu in 2019 and 13 million people were infected. The narrative is clearly that things must not be so bad with the Wuhan outbreak.

One of my wife's friends asked if she was okay, then looked at flu death statistics for China, found out it was like 500,000 last year, and realized that it was just Chinese state media running deflectionary propaganda.

China has a weird way of calculating urban population.

In the PRC, the term "City" is an abbreviation for"city-level prefecture," which is basically the equivalent of an American MSA. There are usually a few "built-up" districts while the rest are villages and farmland that happen to be under the City's jurisdiction. The idea that these functionally rural areas are "urban" is quite misleading.

For example, if you look at Shijiazhuang and Harbin, the prefectural population of each stands at 10 million, but the real urban population is more like 4 million.

Wuhan has about 6 million people in the central districts, which put together are somewhat larger (in sq mileage) than NYC's five boroughs. Compare Wuhan prefecture with the New York MSA and NYC has twice as many people.

RE: The Chinese/Asian coronavirus thread
Here's a coincidence - or not:

The article is 3 years old:

"A laboratory in Wuhan is on the cusp of being cleared to work with the world’s most dangerous pathogens. The move is part of a plan to build between five and seven biosafety level-4 (BSL-4) labs across the Chinese mainland by 2025, and has generated much excitement, as well as some concerns."

....

"But worries surround the Chinese lab, too. The SARS virus has escaped from high-level containment facilities in Beijing multiple times, notes Richard Ebright, a molecular biologist at Rutgers University in Piscataway, New Jersey. Tim Trevan, founder of CHROME Biosafety and Biosecurity Consulting in Damascus, Maryland, says that an open culture is important to keeping BSL-4 labs safe, and he questions how easy this will be in China, where society emphasizes hierarchy. “Diversity of viewpoint, flat structures where everyone feels free to speak up and openness of information are important,” he says."

https://www.nature.com/news/inside-the-c...ns-1.21487

“The world is what it is; men who are nothing, who allow themselves to become nothing, have no place in it.”

RE: The Chinese/Asian coronavirus thread
If the election was held today, and was fair, Trump would win in a landslide.

The democrats have no candidate that will come close. Maybe they'll wheel out Clinton, Michael Obama or Oprah.... but I think their best option is to have the election cancelled or delayed (if they can't take out Trump, which they have tried several times... here was the likely most latest attempt in early Jan 2020).

This could be one of the irons in the fire to be able to do just that... reminds me of the Zika virus in the lead up to the 2016 election (also patented).
