Not familiar with the Pacific Coast, but I was reading about Bahia Solano and some other spots along there, might be a fun adventure spot to check out eventually

You get 3 months with a tourist visa upon entry, and you can extend it for an additional 3 months while in the country, no border run necessary. Im not sure how or where but I met a few people who did that.

As far as residency goes, your best bet is an investment visa.

Starting around $20000 USD depending on the current exchange rate

Your other options include marrying a Colombians or having a kid on Colombian soil.

^Can also do a Rentista Visa to get long-term residency, I believe. Renewable every year. Need to meet a monthly income requirement (around $2,500/mo. USD). I have heard you can apply and do all the paperwork from the USA and then once you have your visa get it certified in-country (Colombia).

The rentista visa is only if you have a guaranteed income in the form of Rent payments, annuities, dividends etc. Can't be income in the form of salary/freelancing etc

Thats right up my alley..... I may look more into it at a later date. I need to get back to Murica for a bit and handle some business, coronavirus has flipped everything upside down though

The Pacific coast of Colombia from Capurgana all the way down to Tumaco is a crazy, wild place that’s great for adventures like fishing, diving, surfing, jungle tours, river rafting, etc. I’ve been to a few spots like Necocli, Bahia Solano, San Cipriano and Buenaventura and they were all pretty interesting but some spots like Tumaco should be avoided due to security issues. Cool place to visit but I wouldn’t live on the Pacific coast.

Scotian.

Im headed to Bahia Solano, likely in August. They recently installed broadband internet which is all i need to secure income. I love that part of the world. Most interesting region ive ever explored. Best fishing on Earth. Surfing. Easy to import beautiful women from Medellin
. It wild and kinda dangerous... But its free. Planning on a 6 month stay.

I’m thinking real hard about Ecuador has a landing spot. Lots to like:
-Fairly easy rentista visa to obtain with low income requirement
-Ecuador doesn’t tax foreign income (ie. USA investment dividend income)
-Uses American dollar
-Low cost of living with great outdoor options

Verifying all of this with attorneys/tax professionals.

I only stayed one night in BS, I visited nearby (30 minutes taxi) El Valle and thought it was much nicer, as it’s directly on the ocean so the beach has great waves whereas BS, as the name suggests, is on a bay. It’s likely more developed there now, I was there in 2014 and some hotels were being built at that time. I haven’t been to Nuquia but that’s supposed to be a nice spot too, with direct flights to Medellin.

Another option is Juanchacho and Ladrilleros which are also bays near Buenaventura, they’re similar to Bahia Solano but you go by boat (1 hour) from Buenaventura. There’s a weekly cargo ship that sails from Buenaventura to Solano, it’s a 24 hour trip and passengers can buy tickets but definitely make arrangements before if you go.

Another awesome place that Id love yo go is Isla Gorgona which is an island that used to have a prison like Alcatraz, similar to the Galapagos too, they do dive trips out there: https://en.m.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Isla_Gorgona
